Pet insurance in 2026: Is it worth it?
Why is there so much talk about pet insurance now?
In recent years, Spanish legislation on responsible animal ownership has evolved a lot. The Animal Welfare Law and regional regulations have increased the obligations of owners.
Civil liability insurance for dogs is already mandatory in many autonomous communities, and there are breeds for which it has always been mandatory.
But beyond the legal obligation, veterinary expenses can be very high: an emergency operation can exceed €2,000-3,000. This is where pet insurance starts to make real sense.
Civil liability vs. veterinary assistance
Not all pet insurance covers the same thing. There are two large blocks that should be understood separately:
Civil liability covers damages that your pet may cause to third parties: bites, destruction and accidents. It is the mandatory part in many cases.
Veterinary assistance covers the animal's health expenses: consultations, vaccines, surgeries, emergencies. It is not always included in all modalities.
Some policies focus on civil liability and others on veterinary care. The most complete ones combine both, but the cost is higher.
What optional coverages exist?
Depending on the modality, you can find additional coverage such as:
• Theft or loss of the animal.
• Accidental death: compensation for the value of the animal.
• Stay expenses if you need hospitalization and no one can take care of your pet.
• 24-hour telephone veterinary advice.
• Sacrifice necessary due to illness or accident.
Not all of these coverages are necessary for everyone. The important thing is to assess which ones give you real peace of mind.
Indicative prices in 2026
Pet insurance prices in Spain vary depending on species, breed, age and coverage included:
• Basic civil liability for dogs: from €40-70/year.
• Civil liability + basic veterinary assistance: from €120-200/year.
• Complete cover (civil liability + veterinary care + optional cover): from €250-400/year.
• For cats, prices are usually somewhat lower, since the risk of civil liability is lower.
These ranges are indicative. The key is to compare what each option includes, not just the annual price.
Is it worth it or not?
The answer depends on three factors:
1. Legal obligation: If you need mandatory civil liability insurance, there is not much to think about. It is essential.
2. Potential veterinary expense: if your pet is prone to health problems or is elderly, veterinary care can be amortized with a single emergency.
3. Peace of mind: knowing that you are covered for unforeseen events (bite on a neighbor, animal accident) has a value that is not measured only in euros.
In our experience, pet insurance is especially worth it when you combine civil liability with a reasonable level of veterinary assistance. The key is not to pay for coverage that you don't need, but also not to fall short on the ones that do matter.
5 questions before hiring
1. Do I need mandatory civil liability insurance because of my autonomous community or my pet's breed?
2. How much do I currently spend per year on a veterinarian?
3. Which optional options provide me with real value and which ones are dispensable?
4. Is there an age limit to hire or renew?
5. Does the insurance cover pre-existing events or only new events?
